Many production tasks happen at a height nobody chose for the operator. A press, a conveyor, a fixed assembly line, or a large machine being serviced sets the work height, and the people doing the work have to adapt. Taller and shorter operators end up reaching overhead, standing on improvised steps, or working outside the ergonomic "green zone," the range between a worker's knees and shoulders. A height-adjustable personnel platform solves this by bringing the operator to the work.
Change the Operator Height, Not the Machine
DMS sums up the idea this way: when you cannot change the work height, change the operator height. Modifying equipment to suit operators is often impractical or impossible, and ladders or improvised step systems aren't built for hours of production work. The Levelizer® ADJ-HITE Personnel Platform is a self-leveling ergonomic elevation system designed to safely adjust operator height when the work surface cannot be changed, improving posture, productivity, and workplace safety. Keeping work in the green zone is the same principle behind DMS's other ergonomic equipment; see The Benefits of Worker Performance Through Ergonomic Zone Design.
Signs a Station Needs a Personnel Platform
- Operators reach above their shoulders, or bend below their knees, to work at a machine or line whose height can't be changed.
- People stand on ladders, step stools, pallets, or other improvised steps to reach the work.
- Operators of different heights share the same station, so no single fixed height suits everyone.
- Maintenance or servicing on large equipment means repeated climbing to reach the same area.
If the answer to any of these is yes, the fix is to raise the operator in a controlled way rather than ask them to adapt.
What the ADJ-HITE Personnel Platform Offers
- Self-leveling height adjustment with configurable starting and finished heights.
- Up to 2,000 lbs. of load capacity and heavy-duty industrial construction.
- Integrated handrail systems and articulating stair options for getting on and off the platform.
- Standard models, or a platform fully customized to your specifications.
DMS lists the benefits as reduced strain and fatigue, improved productivity, enhanced operator safety, greater workflow flexibility, consistent ergonomic positioning, and structural integrity under load.
Where Personnel Platforms Are Used
The ADJ-HITE Personnel Platform is built for environments where equipment height cannot be modified, including:
- Fixed-height production lines
- Large equipment servicing
- Assembly and packaging operations
- Maintenance workstations
- Manufacturing and industrial facilities
Adjustable Platform vs. Fixed Stairs or Static Stands
A fixed stair platform or a static elevation stand sets one height. That works when one operator does one task at one height, but not when operators of different heights share a station or the task changes. Unlike fixed stair platforms or static elevation stands, the ADJ-HITE adapts to operational requirements while maintaining stability and load support up to its 2,000 lb. capacity. Because the starting and finished heights are configured for the application, the platform can be matched to the range of operators and tasks at the station rather than to a single compromise height.
Platform, Workstation, or Lift Station?
DMS makes three kinds of ergonomic equipment that solve height problems in different ways. The right one depends on what you can move: the person, the work surface, or the load.
| Situation | Product | What it adjusts |
|---|---|---|
| The equipment or line height is fixed | Levelizer® ADJ-HITE Personnel Platform | The operator's standing height, with configurable starting and finished heights and up to 2,000 lbs. capacity |
| The work happens on a bench you can change | Levelizer® ADJ-HITE Workstation | The work surface, from 0 in. to 16 in., manual or electric, for seated or standing work, up to 2,000 lbs. |
| Operators build up or break down pallets or totes | Levelizer® lift stations | The load, using a self-leveling spring system that adjusts as product is added or removed |
The ADJ-HITE Workstation is a fully welded, industrial-grade adjustable workbench for assembly, inspection, packaging, and maintenance work cells. Options include multiple tabletop materials, air manifolds, integrated tool stations, overhead lighting, and electrical power strips. If the work happens at a bench, raising or lowering the bench may be the better fit. When the work height is set by a machine or line, the personnel platform is the better match. What to Tell DMS Before Quoting
DMS doesn't publish a single height range or deck size for the ADJ-HITE Personnel Platform, because both are configured to the application. Standard models are available; contact DMS for their dimensions. To size a platform, DMS needs:
- Height travel needed: the lowest and highest deck heights your operators need to keep the task in their green zone.
- Deck size: how much standing and working room the operators need on the platform.
- Load on the platform: the number of operators plus any parts, tools, or material that will sit on the deck. Capacity is up to 2,000 lbs.
- What the platform will be used for: the machine or line it serves, the task, and how often operators get on and off. This helps DMS configure the stairs and handrails.
These are the same optional platform questions on the quote form. Photos of the equipment and the floor area around it are useful too.
Funding for Ergonomic Improvements
Ohio employers may be able to offset part of the cost through the Ohio BWC Workers' Safety Intervention Grant, which can help pay for ergonomic solutions. BWC decides eligibility; see Ohio Bureau of Workers' Safety Intervention Grant for how the program works.
